2011 - Betty and David Farrell Memory Care Home Solutions is proud to honor Betty and David C. Farrell as the Alzheimer’s Community Service Awardees for 2011. Betty and David have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and advocacy for the welfare, health and education of the St. Louis community – our organization is fortunate to have their unwavering support for families caring for loved ones with memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
David served as the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the May Department Stores Company. Mr. Farrell spent his career with the May Company, joining Kaufmann’s, the company’s Pittsburgh-based department store, upon graduation from Antioch College in 1956. Beginning as a buyer, he became vice president and general merchandise manager in 1966, president of Kaufmann’s and vice president of the May Department Stores Company in 1969. He was elected a director of the company in 1974, became president and chief operating officer in 1975, chief executive officer in 1979, and was named chairman and chief executive officer in 1985, where he served until his retirement in 1998. In 2000, David and Betty Farrell, in partnership with the former May Co., established the David C. and Betty Farrell Distinguished Professorship in Medicine in Washington University’s John Milliken Department of Medicine. The Farrells also provided the leadership gift to build the state-of-the-art Farrell Learning and Teaching Center on the medical campus. Like her husband, Betty Farrell is a dedicated community volunteer, notably through her work on behalf of the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Missouri Botanical Garden; she has served on the Botanical Garden’s Board of Commissioners. She served on the University Libraries National Council from 1987 to 1990 and led a fundraising effort for an archaeology project at the university. In addition, the Farrells also have long supported the St. Louis community by providing a scholarship fund that sends local inner-city children to private schools. David served on the Board of Directors at Emerson for 20 years and was a member of the Board of Directors at Ralston Purina. He is a director for many civic and cultural institutions and has served as chairman for many civic fund-raising activities. He is a member of the Board of Commissioners of The Saint Louis Art Museum and a lifetime trustee of the Saint Louis Symphony Society, serves on the Community Advisory Board of the Siteman Cancer Center, and is trustee emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Washington University. David served as chairman for the Danforth Circle Eliot Society and is also on the National Council for Washington University’s Medical School. He is a director of the Saint Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Knight of Malta and he chaired the St. Louis Lambert International Airport Business Task Force. In 2009 David received the William Greenleaf Eliot Society Search Award, in 2007 an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Washington University in St. Louis, 2006 the Robert S. Brookings Award from Washington University and in 2003 Mr. Farrell received the 2nd Century Award from the Washington University School of Medicine, in 2000 he was honored by Cardinal Ritter College Prep with its Leadership Award. Mr. Farrell was also honored by the Regional Commerce and Growth Association with the Right Arm of St. Louis Award in 1998. In 1988, he received The Saint Louis Award, presented to leaders who brought distinction to St. Louis, and in 1985 he was presented the Levee Stone Award by Downtown St. Louis Partnership. Betty and David reside in Ladue. They are the parents of 3 grown children and 4 grandsons.

Director, Washington University Center for Health Policy Alan A. and Edith L. Wolff, Distinguished Professor of Medicine former Dean, Washington University School of Medicine "Bill Peck is one of the most “eligible” honorees. He’s sought after because he’s well-known, accomplished, eloquent and smart. In the case of Memory Care Home Solutions, he’s also the most logical and deserving recipient of our first Community Service Honoree Award. From a public policy perspective, he’s motivated our organization to address the need for unique in-home training to nationally serve the burgeoning population of Alzheimer’s caregivers. As a stellar Advisory Council member, he’s helped Memory Care Home Solutions define a roadmap for raising funds, serving more caregivers and ensuring more robust data. Bill cares deeply about the broader community and is committed to supporting social entrepreneurship as well as innovative health care services. For all of these reasons, Memory Care Home Solutions is proud to award the First Community Service Award (2009) to the very deserving Dr. William A. Peck." - Lisa Baron, J.D., Founder and Executive Director, Memory Care Home Solutions |
